Piece of Berlin Wall has home at B&L World Headquarters

WHEC-TVThe Berlin Wall came crashing down in Germany 20 years ago today. Thousands danced in the streets on November 9, 1989 and they're dancing again today.

The wall was brought down by those living in East Berlin who no longer wanted to live under communist oppression. It was symbolically and metaphorically the end of the Soviet empire which collapsed shortly there after.

Today, parts of the Berlin Wall can be found all around the world including here in Rochester. A 4’x10’ piece of the wall is at the Garden Center at Bausch and Lomb World Headquarters in downtown. The B&L subsidiary in Germany donated it back in the 1990's.

Elizabeth Harness Murphy of the Bausch & Lomb Corporate Communications & Public Affairs said, “In the winter garden you'll see the photo of the actual piece of the wall and the portion of the wall from which this came. And actually the graffiti is translated too and it's got a really nice message. So it says every wall falls eventually.”

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961. At least 192 people died trying to escape to democratic West Berlin over the next 28 years.
