ATF investigating massive Family Dollar fire

Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield says safety is still a major concern after yesterday's massive fire at the Family Dollar store on Clinton Avenue. Firefighters had to put out more hot spots today. ATF agents are helping with the investigation.

There was a second fire at a Family Dollar store on Goodman Street Monday but investigators are still not saying if both are connected. Now, News 10NBC has learned of a third Dollar story fire in Buffalo recently.

Investigators are waiting to get inside the building and begin their work however the fire department has ruled this fire suspicious.

Today was another day of pouring water on the burning building. Firefighters have been at the scene throughout the day touching up hot spots there are a number of questions to answer.

Chief Caufield says the investigation will be labor intensive. He also says the structure is unstable and safety is a huge concern. Caufield says it will be a systematic, organized investigation.

Meanwhile merchants have spent the day assessing the damage. The Family Dollar was destroyed. Fire also burned the stores located nearest the Family Dollar like Auto Finishers, and Computer Repair. Some of the stores on the other end of the plaza only have smoke and water damage but all of them are closed.

Chief John Caufield said, “We will not be able to determine the actual cause until we get into the building and really find the initial starting point. We know basically where it was, but we don't know how it started. That's why we've asked for the ATF folks to come in and help us.”

Elaine Banitskas of Kithnos Seafood Market said, “It's quite a loss but hopefully our store isn't as damaged because we're the last store in the plaza so we're hoping to be up and ready to go in about three weeks.”

One of the main things investigators will be looking at the connection between the two Family Dollar stores in Rochester and the fire in Buffalo. News 10NBC is told that store also burned to the ground.

Investigators should be able to take a closer look at the scene Wednesday but the fire department will need to make sure all the hot spots are out and all the safety issues have been addressed.
