A string of burglaries in East Irondequoit have police asking neighbors for help.
About 500 Irondequoit residents learned two days ago by letter that there have been a number of break-ins near them.
According to police, most of the burglaries have been in the area of Pardee Road and the side streets there between Norton and Empire.
Community Services Unit Officer James Reed said, "In the last month we've approximately eight to nine burglaries."
"It's the first like I've had a letter in the mail like this from the police department." Robert Jouppi has lived in this neighborhood for more than 30 years. He says this news does have him and his wife on edge. "I think we will keep the doors locked a little more now than we have in the past."
Other neighbors agree. Most say this is a quiet neighborhood. Now everyone is being more careful.
Ursula Krogermeier says she does a number of things around her home to more safe, like putting noise makers on her door. "I check around the house to see if there are footprints, or tracks. Right now is a good time to see the footprints because of the weather."
The letter tells residents, "At several of the burglaries there appear to be at least two sets of footprints in the snow as well as bike tracks."
Police say they don't know just yet how many people are involved, who they might be or how they are getting around. This is why they passed out the letters.
Officer Reed said, "Not to scare people, but to alert people -- let them know something is going on in their neighborhood. Let them know we need them to call."
Neighbors say they are glad police let them know what's going on.
News10NBC is told police have already receives more phone calls regarding the burglaries. They say people should be alert until they can get all the information they need.
Police tell News10NBC that at most of the burglaries the suspects are taking smaller items like jewelry and leaving things like electronics behind.
