Brockport voters leave code enforcement department under mayor

nullThe ongoing battle between the mayor and the police chief in the village of Brockport went to the polls Tuesday.

Chief Daniel Varrenti arrested his boss, Mayor Connie Castañeda, in March. She was charged with official misconduct for illegally renting out rooms in her single-family home.

Castañeda has openly criticized the cost of the police department, and she's suing the chief and her own village, saying she was arrested for political reasons.

Tuesday, voters were deciding whether to change village law so that the code enforcement officer reports directly to the police chief rather than the mayor.

The vote was a close one, but more than 53% said no to changing the law. That means the code enforcement officer will still report to the mayor of Brockport.

Two village trustees were also elected. Margay Blackman and Bill Andrews were the only candidates on the ballot.
