An upstate New York prison inmate has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for falsely filing tax returns seeking $890 million in refunds.

Prosecutors say 48-year-old Ronald Williams filed the bogus returns from 2006 to 2010 while at various state prisons. He was actually issued a refund for $327,456 once but prison officials intercepted the check and returned it to the IRS, which led the investigation.

Williams was convicted in January of 11 counts of filing false claims and one count of helping another inmate file bogus returns.

Williams was serving two to four years for possession of stolen property when he was charged in February 2011.

Williams also was ordered to pay a $1,200 fee.
