nullThe name of a fallen marine from Steuben County can now be proudly displayed on the outside of the Hornell Post Office.

The postal service made the announcement Tuesday to Lance Corporal Zachary Smith’s family.

The honor almost didn’t happen. In 2010, the Hornell Post Office was renamed the Zachary Smith Post Office building, but the postal service regulations don’t allow for people’s names to be placed outside the building. Smith’s family started a campaign with the help of local lawmakers and the postal service decided to make an exception.

Smith was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in January 2010.
