A Greece Police officer was attacked by a dog while responding to a domestic dispute. It happened a home on Cragg Road just before midnight Tuesday.

Police say when officers arrived, they encountered a Mastiff mix breed and asked the owner, 31-year-old Charese Whitaker, to secure the dog. Whitaker secured the dog and placed it in another room.

According to police, when Officer John Fogarty had to walk past the dog to assist a family member retrieve property, the dog – who was previously lying down – lunged at the officer and bit him. Officer Fogarty suffered puncture wounds in his leg and lacerations.

Animal Control was called to the home where they took custody of the dog. Police say Whitaker was unable to provide proof that the dog was licensed and had the appropriate rabies vaccine.

Animal Control says it has several pending court cases involving this dog and its owner.

Officer Fogarty was treated and released from Rochester General Hospital.
