Local group aims to keep fit for triathlons

Every Sunday morning and Thursday evening, members of the Rochester Area Triathletes meet at Durand Eastman Beach to train for future triathlons. At each meeting the group swims, runs, and bikes to stay in shape. The group first started meeting in 1988 as a way for local triathletes to gain more experience.
But members, like group President Rob Smura, says it also gives people a reason to get off the coach and get active.
"We do this so that people can get actual open water swim experience and we can sort of get people up off the couch and out and doing something active," says Smura. "Everybody can do a triathlon, you just have to start at some point and put one foot in front of the other."
The group now has around 260 members and will take part in the Rochester Kids Triathlon at Genesee Valley Park next weekend, and the Rochester Triathlon in late August at Durand Eastman Beach.
