The University of Rochester is the recipient of a five-year, $1,282,955 grant from the Department of Education. The grant was announced by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.

The grant will support the U of R’s Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program which helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue PhD degrees.

Earlier this year, Slaughter sent a letter to Congressional Colleagues urging a significant increase in funding to the office that oversees the McNair Achievement Program . In April, Slaughter sent a second letter opposing a major funding cut to the program.

Slaughter said, “Today’s award is an incredible boost to the students of the University of Rochester. Grants such as these make sure that our brightest minds don’t need to mortgage their future in order to obtain the best education in the world.  In the process, we are ensuring that Rochester is home to the researchers, innovators and inventors that will power our economy for a generation to come.”
