The two same-sex catholic high schools in Rochester are both enrolling sixth graders for the first time this year.
News10NBC was at Our Lady of Mercy Wednesday morning as a spiritual director blessed the classrooms being used by the young women in the class of 2019.
Mercy opened in 1928 as a high school and seventh and eighth graders were added in 1990, now there is a sixth grade
Middle School Director Nancy Wunder said, “It's been exciting, it's been nerve-wracking, it's been up and down but we're opening with 35 young ladies and it's extremely exciting.”
McQuaid Jesuit, the all-boys Catholic school, also has sixth graders enrolled for the first time.
Over the summer, six classrooms were added to accommodate the new students.
