The final numbers are in for Rochester's two municipal lifeguard beaches on Lake Ontario for the Summer of 2012, and for swimmers at Ontario beach, the news wasn't good.
The Monroe County Health Department says Ontario beach was open just 46% of the time. Measured by actual days, Ontario beach was open for swimming 37 days and closed 44 days.
City-operated Durand beach was open 58 days and closed 14 days, open 81%.
A spokesman for the County Health Department says pollution and the pier at Charlotte are the main reason why Ontario beach was closed more often than Durand. The pier is notorious for trapping algae which can cause water quality problems.
