Keeping players safe on the gridiron was front and center at Gates-Chili High School on Monday.
Senator Chuck Schumer was joined by local high school football players and coaches to push legislation to make helmets safer for high school and youth football players, in order to cut down on head injuries like concussions.
Senator Schumer says the current voluntary safety standards for football helmets do not specifically address concussion risk or youth-size helmets.
"As we know, concussions in sports is happening- not just to our professional athletes but to our young people as well. Throughout America there are about 500,000 sustained concussions annually," Senator Schumer said.
The new legislation would require school districts to purchase the safest helmets available on the market.
