A 9/11 tribute was held on Tuesday night at Sahlen’s Stadium. Local first responders were invited on the soccer field before the start of the night’s Hillside Community Shield match between RIT and the University of Rochester men’s soccer game, raising money for local families.
This was the first ever hillside community shield match supporting kids and families, served by the Hillside Family of Agencies.
The games featuring Aquinas and McQuaid and RIT and the U of R, is a way to promote both the game of soccer locally as well as to raise money.
The game was also held on a date significant to all Americans.
Before the featured match between the U of R and RIT, County Executive Maggie Brooks lead a 9-11 tribute and moment of silence. City and county first responders were invited on to the field, paying tribute to those who lost their lives trying to save others after the September 11th attacks.
Hillside Children’s Foundation President, Tom Hildebrant helped to organize Tuesday night’s event, saying it was an honor to hold this inaugural event on this date.
He says, “The scheduling of this date was really a coincidence, this is the date that these two college teams were planning to play each other, schedules are set years in advance. So nothing more than a coincidence in that regard. I think it was also a great opportunity to think about how we can thank the first responders... the police, the firemen…people maybe we take for granted everyday of our lives.”
