Fish oil supplements are known for their supposed heart health benefits but a new study says taking fish oil might be a waste.

Researchers looked at several studies. They found taking the supplements slightly reduced risk of heart-related deaths.

In a statement, the Council for Responsible Nutrition suggested the results were skewed, because the combined studies reviewed were not comparable in their design.

Still, dieticians say getting your vitamins and nutrients from food is your best bet.

Omega-3 fatty acids, which make up fish oil supplements, are found naturally in tuna, salmon, walnuts and flax seed.
