nullA sophomore at MCC was brutally attacked outside of a Jefferson Road restaurant. She said all she was trying to do was help.

Last Sunday, the victim says she and her three roommates were leaving the restaurant after lunch and noticed a man and woman involved in a physical dispute, so she intervened. But she never thought her intervention would land her in the hospital for almost a week. Now she’s trying to make sense of the situation and hoping police find the man who did this.

Monday was Kaila’s first day back on campus since the incident last Sunday. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and they say they don’t have any suspects in custody. But Kaila and her friends and family want justice and they want the man who did this to know, it’s not okay.

Kaila, Kelsey, Mackenzie and Kelly met each other freshman year last year. Now they can’t imagine sharing a dorm with anyone else. And like they often do, two Sundays ago the girls went to get lunch.

Kaila Cavicchioli, MCC student, said, “Just lunch with my roommates and we were going to Chipotle, it’s one of our favorite restaurants.”

But this trip to Chipotle would ultimately change the course of their sophomore year.

Cavicchioli said, “I remember waking up in the ambulance with my friend Mackenzie and just asking what happened. I blacked out to be completely honest.”

While leaving the girls say they saw a man pushing around another woman. Kaila knew she couldn’t just walk away.

Cavicchioli said, “She was like crying, screaming in the middle of Jefferson Road, million of cars driving by no one else is helping you.”

Kelsey Collins said, “I don't even remember what was said.  Like I don't even remember what they were saying to each other just because I was in such shock that all this was happening, like he had hit her then me and Kaila all within 5 minutes.”

The girls stopped their car to try to help the woman and that’s when they say the man came up to the car, reached in and began to assault Kelsey. Kaila went into action, leaping out of the car. That’s when she says the man punched her in the face, throwing her to the ground.

Kelsey Collins said, “Her just falling, like out of the corner of my eye, I didn't even realize. So she was on the ground and I had my hand under her as he was walking away.”

Cavicchioli said, “I just recall shuffles of doctors and nurses going in and out through cat scans and then just remember then saying no more bleeding, bleeding.”

Kaila was rushed to Strong Hospital where she was treated for a concussion and a frontal lobe hemorrhage. She’s stunned her act of kindness led to this, but admits, she would stand up for that woman all over again.

Cavicchioli said, “Helping people is just what I want to go to school for. Being in the criminal justice field has always been in my nature.”
