Two people charged in connection with the death of a Fairport biology teacher were arraigned in Monroe County Court Monday afternoon.
Meagan Merkel and Mark Scerbo, both 23, were charged with manslaughter, DWI and other charges in Monroe County Court.
Merkel is facing seven charges and Scerbo is facing ten charges. Both were charged with manslaughter, DWI and driving without a license. Scerbo was also charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
Investigators say Scerbo was riding a motorcycle and hit Heather Boyum who was riding her bicycle on Route 250 in Penfield in July. After Boyum was hit by the motorcycle, Merkel’s car ran her over. Both suspects remain in the Monroe County Jail.
A woman who worked with Boyum at Fairport was in court for the arraignments. She spoke with News10NBC afterwards.
Nan Helser, friend of Heather Boyum, said, “That she (Boyum) was just full of life and just a good person and upbeat. No matter what happened she what never was down was just a great person and a wonderful teacher brilliant.”
Both Merkel and Scerbo will be back in court November 13 and their trial date has been set for March 11.
