Inmates at the Orleans Correctional Facility are teaming up with the Rochester Police Department to take a stand against violence through a gun buyback program that is supported by inmate funds.
The RPD will work with inmates, Full Gospel Tabernacle Church and the newly-formed Rochester Police Foundation to combat violence.
Inmates of the Orleans Correctional Facility's "Civic Duty Initiative Team" received approval to raise money for the purpose of funding a gun buyback program to benefit Rochester. Officials say this is significant because the inmates want to make a difference and come together to help save lives.
Inmates raised $1,050 in 18 months for this program. That amount was matched by members of the congregation at Full Gospel Tabernacle Church and the Rochester Police Foundation.
The gun buyback date is set for this Saturday, September 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Full Gospel Tabernacle Gospel Church on Clifford Avenue.
Turning in a long gun results in a $50 gift card from Wegmans and a hand gun is worth a $100 gift card from Wegmans.
