The nation's airlines have set a record on baggage fees.

U.S. Airlines collected more than $1.7-billion in baggage fees during the first half of the year alone. That's the largest amount ever collected from January to June.

According to a report from the Bureau of Transportation, Delta Airlines collected the most at nearly $430 million followed by United Airlines which raked in $351 million.

It was the year 2008 when airlines began charging for a first checked suitcase. The fees have climbed ever since.
