This is a tragedy News10NBC has been tracking all day.
Campus Police say they found the body of a female student shortly after 2.30 a.m on Saturday.
She was found in a dorm at McLean Hall.
Campus Police say her boyfriend, 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore is a suspect. On Saturday afternoon he was charged with 2nd degree murder. He plead not guilty.
News10NBC's cameras were rolling as 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore burst into tears.
The Sheriff's Office says he killed a female student inside of her dorm room between 1 and 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.
They ended up tracking the suspect down at a rest stop in Dewitt around 4 a.m.
Our investigators have confirmed the suspect was visiting her at the campus on Friday night.
They refused to comment on whether the relationship was "rocky" or not.
Chief Robert Kehoe, from the SUNY College of Brockport Police, says, "It's tragic when anybody loses their life. When a young lady who is a college student and apparently in a safe environment is brutally murdered as this young lady was it's certainly a tragedy for her family and friends and the entire Brockport College community."
School Officials say Whittemore is not a student at the College of Brockport. Our affiliates are reporting that he was a star athlete in New Hartford playing Hockey for the last few years.
Even though the victim sustained extensive trauma to the upper body, the exact cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner. Deputies would not comment if there was a weapon used in the attack.
At this hour, News10NBC does not know much about the victim. The Sheriff's Office is still holding her identity and information until all of her family is notified.
The case is still under investigation. News10NBC expects to know more about the student hopefully by Sunday.
