The results of a new Siena College Poll on the race for the 55th state Senate District were released Wednesday morning.
Republican Assemblyman Sean Hanna and Democrat Monroe County Legislator Ted O’Brien are running for Jim Alesi's seat who is retiring.
According to the Siena Poll, if the election were held today, Hanna would win. He is eight points ahead of O'Brien – 47-percent to 39-percent.
The poll also says 14-percent of voters are still undecided.
In response to the Siena Poll, Hanna said, "I'm encouraged that voters in the 55th District are responding to my record of cutting income taxes, capping property taxes, and reducing government spending. There's much more to be done, but Albany is finally working in a bipartisan matter to create jobs and bolster the financial security of our families. I look forward to carrying these poll results on through Election Day, and will continue to work on behalf of our community in the Senate."
O'Brien's campaign also issued a statement in response to the poll. Campaign Manager Loren Amor said, "A multimillion dollar barrage of lies by Sean Hanna could not get him over 50-percent or ahead by more than single digits while he had the playing field all to himself. Now that we have begun highlighting the truth as this campaign begins in earnest, I guarantee Ted O'Brien will close this small gap and pass Sean Hanna by Election Day. By the time they make their decision, voters will know Ted O'Brien is the only candidate in this race who voted against every property tax increase that came across his desk while anti-choice Sean Hanna voted for the largest property tax increase in Monroe County history."
Wednesday morning, O’Brien received the endorsement of the Rochester Police Locust Club and Rochester Firefighters.
