The Seneca Park Zoo sadly announced the unexpected passing of its six-year-old male seal lion, Puff.
Zoo officials say Puff did not recover from a series of treatments for bloody nasal discharge.
“The necropsy confirmed an invasive necrotizing sinusitis, the exact cause of which will be determined in six to eight weeks by subsequent bacterial and fungal cultures and histopathology,” said Dr. Jeff Wyatt, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Health & Conservation. “This unusual infectious sinus condition is localized and poses no threat to the health of the Zoo’s other sea lions.”
Staff at the Seneca Park Zoo encourages visitors to pay tribute to Puff this weekend by bringing photos, drawings or other small mementos to share with Puff’s caretakers.
Puff was born on June 11, 2006 at Sea World Orlando. He arrived in Rochester on May 18, 2007.
At this time, there are no plans to replace Puff.
