URMC holds Bollywood themed event raising awareness about organ donation

Dozens gathered on Friday to celebrate the University of Rochester Medical Center's transplant program.

Friday's event had a Bollywood theme and flair, with Indian music and cinema superstar Priyanka Chopra on hand.

She is an organ donor and is trying to raise awareness surrounding this issue.

News10NBC spoke with a transplant surgeon about the importance of organ donation.

Christopher Barry is a URMC Transplant Surgeon and Professor of Surgery.

He says, "19 people die every day waiting on a list for an organ. We need to improve our registration, the number of people registered to be organ donors, especially in New York state, where we are 48th worst in the country. We want to bring together this event to help raise awareness."
