General Motors says it will hire as many as 1,500 workers to staff a new computer technology center in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan.
GM is shifting computer work into the company from outside firms and plans to open four new technology centers in the U.S. Last month the company announced it would hire 500 people for a center in Austin, Texas.
It's all part of a move to bring 90 percent of information technology in-house, which GM believes will make it more nimble and efficient. The company could hire 10,000 people to do the work in the next three to five years.
GM says its information technology innovation centers will help get breakthrough ideas into the company's cars and trucks.
Last week, GM announced its closing the Fuel Cell plant in Honeoye Falls. Approximately 220 local jobs will be impacted.
