Democratic Monroe County legislators held a news conference Monday afternoon to unveil a proposal that aims to address some of the issues that surround the high infant mortality rate in Monroe County.

In September, the Prenatal Network launched a campaign to increase awareness about infant mortality in Rochester. The group says 54 babies died before their first birthdays last year in Monroe County. In some cases, unsafe sleep practices are to blame.

Democrats say this legislation would allow the County Executive to have discussion with community groups to create PSAs to raise awareness about the problem and to educate parents.

The proposal has been submitted to Legislature President Jeff Adair who is in charge of assigning it to a committee for consideration.
