City of Rochester recognized by League of American Bicyclists

The City of Rochester is getting national recognition by the League of American Bicyclists. Rochester is now the second city in the state to be given the "Bicycle Friendly Community" Award.

Rochester was awarded the bronze level for investments in things like bike lanes, back racks and shelters, as well as improved pro-bicycling policies. Since 2011, the city has installed 100 bike racks and more than 11 miles of on street bike lanes.

News10NBC talked with riding enthusiasts at Park Ave Bike Shop on Monroe Avenue. They said while infrastructure for bikers is great, bikers and drivers still need to be more aware of the rules of the road and be willing to share it.

David Commisso, Park Ave. Bike Shop Manager, said, “If we get more and more bike lanes, things are more bike friendly and I think the biggest thing is just making people aware, drivers aware, pedestrians aware and cyclists aware too of the rules that they have to abide by.”

New York City is the only other city in New York State with the bicycle friendly distinction.
