nullA central New York police officer who was shot in the line-of-duty last week has been released from the hospital.

Local media outlets report that Officer Anthony Augustine of the Ithaca Police Department walked out of Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse Thursday morning and was given a police escort back to Ithaca.

Augustine was shot late last Thursday night while trying to arrest a man who had been stopped by Ithaca police while driving a stolen car. Authorities say the five-year veteran was shot in the chest.

Police officials say he spent several days in intensive care and suffered a minor stroke after the shooting.

The man charged in the shooting, 22-year-old Jamel Booker, has been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and criminal use of a firearm. He remains in Tompkins County Jail on $500,000 bail.
