It's a project that's been two years in the making, but Friday, RIT put the shovel to the ground on its new hockey arena.

RIT President Bill Destler lead the groundbreaking in the RIT parking lot that will soon be a state of the art, 4,000 seat venue that will be the new home of the Tigers’ Division I Men and Women’s Hockey Team.

RIT Men’s Hockey Coach Wayne Wilson says the new arena will help RIT continue to compete on a national level.

Wayne Wilson said, “I've been here for 14 years and I've seen the program grow and to finally get a new arena, which will not only help our team, but our campus and our community.  Big things as far as the hockey community goes, it's going to make it very special."

The Gene Polisseni Center is expected to be open in time for the 2014-2015 hockey season.
