It's around this time of year when people start thinking of children who need help during Christmas.
On Friday, members of the Rochester Police Department and the organization 'Alternatives for Battered Women' put the very first gifts into their collection boxes for Christmas. They call this the Purple Box Drive.
The gifts go to women and children who escaped abuse and are living at ABW's shelters during the holidays.
Janine Lucas from ABW said, "It's a stressful time for them but if we can put a little bit of light in their lives during the holidays then that means the world to us."
You can donate gifts at the police headquarters starting Friday. ABW also says not to forget about the teenage kids who need Christmas gifts too.
