Art event held for children and teenagers with autism

It's an event designed to highlight the artistic abilities of children with autism.

It's called "Artistic 2" and it was held at the Pieters Family Life Center in Henrietta on Saturday.

The exhibition is now in its second year and has been a success. Talented artists were able to show off their skills on the canvas, some as young as four-years-old.

For some of these young people art is one of their only means of communication. Kate Clemont is a member of Walk Now for Autism Speaks. She says, "A lot of them have siblings who are 'normal' and they are always in competitions and they are in baseball and they are always getting praised for things. This is purely for them and the art gives them a freedom of thinking and a freedom to express themselves. A lot of the children are non-verbal and they have problems expressing themselves, but they get into the paint, they get the art and the enthusiasm is amazing."

All proceeds raised from the event will benefit Autism Speaks so it continue its research into the causes of and treatment for autism.
