Nearly one month after a local soldier was killed in Afghanistan, an article in the New York Times is shining light on what might have happened.
Family members of 29-year-old Sergeant First Class Daniel Metcalfe of Penfield told News10NBC he was killed September 29 by small arms fire.
The Times article says his death may be connected to insider killings of western troops and civilians by Afghan forces.
The article says, “Both sides acknowledge that the strains of an effort by American troops to minimize contact with their Afghan counterparts during the recent epidemic of insider attacks became a factor on the afternoon of Sergeant Metcalfe's shooting."
The Times adds that Sergeant Metcalfe was one of two American soldiers killed in the shooting which happened at a security checkpoint.
