Officials in the town of Mendon are reminding the community about just how serious hosting an underage party can be.
It was part of a panel discussion held Tuesday night at Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School to talk about the social host law. Under the law, the hosts of a party can be held responsible if they know minors are drinking.
The goal of the law is to provide parents with more awareness of just how severe the situation can be.
Monroe County Legislator Karla Boyce talked about the importance of parents knowing their roles. "You have to make the decision as a parent whether you're going to be a parent or whether you're going to be your child's friend," she said.
Boyce added that awareness is one of the most significant steps for prevention, and education is key in helping to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.
