Students at Pine Brook Elementary School in Greece took part in a mini-relay Wednesday and it was all part of an effort to help the American Cancer Society.

More than 500 students from kindergarten to fifth grade and 70 staff members -- including seven cancer survivors -- are taking part in the day-long event. They will be walking, running, skipping and hopping around the school gym.

Teachers at the school talked about the importance of today's event.

First grade teacher Sandy Eggleston said, “This is our way of giving back and doing something positive and it gets the kids involved and the families involved and we've raised over $13,000."

Second grade teacher Sue Welch said, “It's great, right now we have second graders and fifth graders walking, but we have kids walking throughout the day, teachers walking and we have a handful of survivors here at Pine Brook too."

This year's theme is "Hike for Hope to Find a Cure."

Each donation includes the student's name and the person they're honoring and will be put up on the school's Wall of Caring.
