Hundreds of women came together Thursday to bake bread and pray for those who are sick.
The Pittsford Jewish Women's Circle partnered with the JCC for the "Loaves for Love" event.
The circle came up with the idea to support a family friend who is battling cancer.
Organizers say more than 200 women attended the event.
"A lot of people see traditional religions and say women don't have any role, and that's not really true in Judaism. Traditionally, women had very distinct roles, they were mostly in the home and it was really important it was the whole creation of the Chabbat experience, the Jewish day of rest, and making the challah and separating it was one of the core things. It's one of the three things over which a blessing was said Friday night and that was purely a woman's responsibility," JCC Program Director Joy Getnick says.
Everyone who came to the event baked two loaves of challah. One for them, and one to pass on to someone who "needs a little extra love."
