County activates Emergency Operations Center as Sandy approaches

nullMonroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced that she has ordered the activation of the Monroe County Emergency Operations Center as the area prepares for Hurricane Sandy.

The center will be activated starting Monday morning at 10 a.m. and from that point on will be open 24 hours a day until further notice. Officials say the center will be used to coordinate the effort to prepare and respond to Hurricane Sandy. That storm is expected to pass through the area sometime Monday afternoon through late Tuesday.

The county has also issued a number of warnings regarding the storm. Officials say:

  • Don’t approach downed wires (power lines, telephone, cable, etc) and report them to the appropriate agencies.
  • Only use 911 for emergencies
  • Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly, the homebound, and those with disabilities
  • Do not operate any gas powered equipment inside your home or garage
  • Use caution when lighting candles and fire place. Do not leave them unattended
  • Roads may be slick, so be sure to provide safe distance for braking when driving
  • Do not attempt to drive thru flooded roads or underpasses
  • Intersections with signals out should be treated as a four-way stop
