NY canal system beginning to reopen after storm

New York officials say they have reopened some of the state canals, with the entire 524-mile system expected to fully reopen to boat traffic by Monday.
    
Water levels were lowered to reduce the flooding risk from the superstorm Sandy. But authorities say its impact on the canal was minimal, with no damage to locks, dams or related structures.
    
The canal system is scheduled to close for the winter on November 15.
    
Canal officials announced opening the Oswego, Champlain and Cayuga-Seneca canals on Wednesday, as well as the Erie Canal from St. Johnsville west to Tonawanda.
    
They planned to systematically lower remaining gates and stabilize water levels over the next several days, opening the rest of the Mohawk River and Erie Canal to traffic by Monday.
