Maine, Maryland approve same-sex marriage by popular vote

Some history-making ballot measures could make the Supreme Court take some notice and set up possible showdowns with the federal government.

Maine and Maryland have become the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. The Supreme Court is expected to consider the issue.

Washington state and Colorado legalized recreational use of marijuana, but the drug is still illegal under federal law.
