Officials are aiming to complete the cleanup of the Kershaw Park beach by December 1, said Jim Sprague, the public works director for the City of Canandaigua.
The beach was closed July 18 after an unknown black, oily substance was found in the area.
The cleanup began Tuesday, Oct. 16, and the work consists of excavating contaminated material and shipping it off site for disposal, said City Manager Kay James. The process was started at the west end of the beach, and after completing the cleanup there recently, crews moved to the east end.
