A family gets an unexpected Thanksgiving surprise as they're forced to deliver their baby on the side of the road.
Jeremy and Delores Bennett knew their baby was on the way, so they headed to the hospital. But things happened a light faster than they anticipated.
The Bennett's grabbed their four year old daughter and made their way to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, only for doctors to send them back home. They said the baby was fine. It wasn't until around 3:00am that they made their way back to the hospital but by then, it was just too late.
It's just as shocking for little Amber, as it is for her parents, Jeremy and Dolores Bennett.
Jeremy Bennett said, " Had my baby in one hand and had my phone in the other hand. Not exactly what I expected. Didn't plan for it at all. But it's what happened."
Little Matthew Zaine was supposed to arrive on December 14, but early Thursday morning, he made his way into the world. His arrival wasn't as typical as you think. His parents were forced to pull over on 590 on their way to the hospital. Baby Matthew was delivered in the front seat of the car.
Bennett said, "as soon as he cried, there was definite relief there, but the fact that we were on the side of the road and we still had the other have of the birth to go made so it wasn't over."
Jeremey Bennett says the experience was nerve wrecking. He had to listen closely to 911 operators and even had to tie a shoelace around the umbilical cord. Not exactly the delivery this family expected, but still they agree, they had a lot to be thankful for.
Bennett said, "I'm just happy that he's here and healthy."
Baby Matthew weighed in at five pounds and eleven ounces. He is 20 inches long. The Bennett's won't be home for Thanksgiving, but they are expected to leave the hospital by this weekend.
