An emotional day for the Fairport community as a local teenager is laid to rest.
The funeral for Blake Cognata was held Thursday afternoon. Cognata died this past weekend after a long battle with cancer.
The entire Fairport community rallied around Cognata in his final days.
The funeral service was definitely emotional for the hundreds of people, but it was more of a celebration of Blake Cognata's life.
The funeral started at 2:30 p.m., but people began arriving at St. John's of Rochester at noon. Bus loads of his fellow football and lacrosse teammates came in their jerseys to honor the star athlete.
The church was completely filled to its maximum capacity. The crowds exceeded more than 800 people, that's not including the hundreds who were watching from Fairport High School. The funeral was broadcast live for students and faculty who could not make it out. But those who did make it out to the church had only good things to say about Blake Cognata. They say they were not surprised at just how many people made it out to support this grieving family.
Casey Sens, friend, said, “The kid always had a smile on his face. His smile lit up the room.”
Michael Davis, family friend, said, “Very outgoing kid. One of those people that everyone just enjoyed being around. There was just a presence with him and that's what makes
this so very hard.”
One of the most moving moments inside of the funeral was when Blake's father got up to speak. He spoke about the first time he found out he was having a boy to the first time he found out his son had cancer.
