Americans spent a lot on gasoline last year but according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gasoline expenditures in 2012 for the average American household topped $2,900.
That’s just under four-percent of income before taxes and the highest estimated percentage of household income spent on gas in nearly three decades with the exception of 2008 when the average household spent a similar amount of money on gas.
In the past 30 days, the price of a gallon of regular gasoline has jumped an average of 22-cents.
