It's a familiar spot to be for the University of Rochester Women's Basketball team The Lady Yellowjackets are hosting an opening round NCAA game Friday.
The U of R women are making their 12th NCAA Division III playoff appearance on Friday. They missed last year's tournament and promised it would not happen two years in a row.
The Yellowjackets are 19-6 heading into this weekend's opening round. They have won 11 of their last 13 games in the playoff drive. The U of R started slow and took some time to gel as a team. When Jim Scheible takes the floor Friday against Emmanuel, it will be his 599th game as head coach. He says his team has grown with four new starters. The team meshed during UAA play and hopes to carry that momentum into the tournament.
Jim Scheible, UR Women's Basketball Coach, said, “We have come in to our own and won and shown we can play on the road and at home, I’m excited for some of these players. It is their chance to do this in front of a home crowd, that's special.”
Jackie Walker, senior, said, “It feels great. Last year was a let down. It was our motivation to be back and when our name was called during the selection show, we screamed, it was awesome.”
The Yellowjackets host Emmanuel College near Boston, a team that is not familiar to the U of R. Their head coach Andy Yosinoff has 709 career wins, so this won't be easy but the ladies say they are up for the challenge..
Tip off at the Palestra Friday at 7:00 p.m. The U of R men host Fitchburg State University Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
