Spread the word to end the word. That's the challenge from the Golisano Foundation.
The Gregory Street Blue Band from Monroe ARC performed Wednesday morning at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The campaign event is part of an effort to create a more accepting world for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Organizers hope people will take a stand against the hurtful use of the R-word.
Stephanie Straka, Spread the Word to End the Word, said, "We're trying to educate everyone because even families don't realize that the terms have changed, to say mental retardation and now it's intellectual disability or cognitive or developmental delays, those are more appropriate terms to use for someone who takes a little bit longer to do the same things everyone else does."
Peter Dailey, Spread the Word to End the Word, said, "It hurts me inside. And I'm constantly trying to educate people not to use it."
The campaign will also include TV public service announcements feature Tom Golisano. To sign up to take the pledge, click here.
