A single concussion can cause long-lasting brain damage.
In a new study, researchers from NYU looked at the brain scans of nearly 30 concussion patients -- many of whom still experienced symptoms a year after their injury. They found measurable brain volume loss in areas related to memory, attention and anxiety.
They say this proves brain damage can occur immediately, and not just after more severe injuries or repeat blows to the head.
