Fourteen brand-name prescription drugs (see list) will become available in generic form this year, potentially saving upstate New Yorkers $196-million annually. That’s according to a new report by Excellus BlueCross Blue Shield.

Diovan – a treatment for high blood pressure, Cymbalta – used for a variety of conditions including depression, pain and fibromyalgia and Niaspan – used to treat high cholesterol – are among the drugs that will be available in generic form.

Expected generic prices:
Diovan – 30-day supply $25
Cymbalta – 30-day supply $55
Niaspan – 30-day supply $37

Excellus BCBS says more than 126,000 upstate New Yorkers use the 14 brand-name drugs that are scheduled to become available as generics.

Next year, 23 additional brand-name drugs – including Nexium -- are scheduled to become available in generic form.
