Longtime Rochester Business Journal sports columnist Rick Woodson died Tuesday after a brief illness.
Mr. Woodson, 72, had written a sports column for the RBJ since 1996, beginning the assignment after a short stint as an RBJ beat reporter. His last column appeared in the newspaper’s March 1 edition.
A dedicated golfer and onetime owner of the Golf Tee, a Webster driving range, Mr. Woodson also served as host of a weekly radio program, “The Golf Tee,” broadcast Sunday mornings on WHTK-AM 1280 and FM 107.2.
A Texas native who grew up in Shreveport, La., Mr. Woodson often tapped into his southern roots in the person of his supposed cousin Billy Bob, an alter ego, he frequently called up as a foil and devil’s advocate in his weekly columns. His interest in sports journalism dated to work as reporter for the student newspaper at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
