Camp Good Days no longer United Way agency, loses guaranteed money

United Way is shifting it's focus and parting ways with some programs banking on it's funding. More than 40 programs that help people all across our area are being impacted.
The United Way says it has to do the most it can with what it has. While many programs depend on your donations, News10NBC is focusing on Camp Good Days which is facing an $80,000 dollar cut.
Camp Good Days is no longer getting money from the United Way's general community fund, that's money that is not donated to a particular organization. You can still make a specific donation to Camp Good Days.
Camp Good Day posted on Twitter that, "We are no longer a United Way of Greater Rochester agency, which means we will no longer have guaranteed funding."
James McCauley says he understands the united way has to make difficult decision. He just can't understand this one.
James McCauley, Camp Good Days and Special Times, said, “We know that what they're trying to do is address those needs as identified by our community. But I cannot believe...”
News10NBC's Berkeley Brean said, “Kids with cancer isn't one of those needs?”
McCauley said, “I cannot believe kids with cancer is not one of those needs.”
Brean said, “Wat our viewers might not understand is how kids with cancer don't come under the funding umbrella of the United Way..”
Patricia Davis, United Way, Director of Community Investment, said, “Kids with cancer absolutely come under the funding umbrella of the United Way.”
Patricia Davis is the head of the United Way's community investment.
Davis said, “It's a great program, there's no doubt about that. It's a matter of in the competitive nature of our funding cycle, there were programs that better met our criteria.”
Lisa Foster's daughter has cancer and has gone to Camp Good Days.
Lisa Foster said, “We came to love camp because of what it did for us. It breaks my heart that maybe other people will not be able to have the same experiences.”
Camp Good Days says you can still donate to the camp through the United Way but it has to be a specific donation. On the form you get at work, you fill in Camp Good Days below the purple area and it's agency ID number is 137.
McCauley said, “We don't agree with this particular choice and we don't mean to be selfish about that but we are going to bring our case to the people.”
The United Way is trying to soften the blow for groups like Camp Good Days.
The camp is losing $80,000 dollars, but the United Way is going to give them $60,000 a year for the next two years. So right now it looks more like a 20,000 deficit.
