Our region might have untapped potential in the hard cider industry.
Senator Charles Schumer says more and more people are drinking hard cider, but local apple orchards are hesitant to produce it because taxes are too high. He says right now the federal tax on hard cider is $1.07 a gallon.
Schumer is proposing to lower it to $0.23 a gallon, which is closer to the tax on beer and wine.
Schumer says the Rochester area is the largest apple growing region in the state.
