Maple producers open doors to public for 'Maple Weekend'

The sap was flowing this weekend at Packard Valley Farms in Macedon. The farm was one of several Rochester area maple producers taking part in "Maple Weekend."
Each year, producers across the state open up their farms to the public, so they can get a look at how the syrup is made. At Packard Valley, residents had a chance to take part in a host of activities from tours of the sap house, tasting samples of syrup, and chowing down on an all you can eat pancake breakfast.
Packard Valley Farms owner Tom Packard says visitors are usually surprised when they see how simple the process is.
“People don't really have a clue what happens with it. Everyone thinks that you add stuff to it and everything. It's an eye opening experience when everyone realizes it just comes out of tree, it looks like water, and you make a product out of it,” said Packard.
