Less than two weeks after a Syracuse-area man was charged with killing a woman and raping her 10-year-old daughter after a carjacking, the state Senate has voted to increase penalties for carjacking vehicles with a child inside.
The Senate voted Tuesday to make it a felony to carjack a vehicle with a child under the age of 16 inside. The bill was introduced before David Renz was accused of abducting a woman and her daughter as they left gymnastics class, though sponsors said it would help deter such crimes.
Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos said the bill would help prosecutors go after criminals who jeopardize children.
An aide to Assemblyman Charles Lavine, a Long Island Democrat sponsoring the bill, said they were optimistic the Assembly would take up the bill.
