A western New York veteran who helped to integrate the Marine Corps during World War II is set to receive the nation's highest civilian honor.
Roscoe Brown will receive the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony in Buffalo Sunday.
Brown was a member of the Montford Point Marines, who nearly 70 years ago became the first African Americans in the Corps.
Congress last year awarded them the Congressional Gold Medal. Brown, who lives in suburban Buffalo, couldn't make a larger ceremony last November.
New York Congressman Brian Higgins and members of the Marines will present his medal at Bethesda World Harvest Church.
Montford Point was a North Carolina base created to keep African Americans away from bases where other Marines trained.
